Wrapped in Angels is an 9-week, resilience-building program for young people aged 13-15 years old.
Throughout the program, skilled adult facilitators assist participants in creating their very own Angel Blanket – a colourful representation of strength, safety and security – to help sustain and nourish them when facing dislocation, separation from family and culture, abuse, violence and trauma.
Participants identify symbols of the things in life that makes them feel safe and strong: friends, family, pets and animals, places, events, items they cherish, activities they enjoy etc. They then sew these symbols onto their Angel Blanket, which serves as a reminder of what holds them and keeps them strong, safe, secure, connected and loved.
The blanket is a tangible object to work on and connect with the things that are important and add value and meaning to the young person’s life. When wrapped in their Angel Blanket, a young person can draw these connections close, keep warm and feel comforted by the memories sewn on to the fabric, and remember the experiences that have built and grown their resilience.
Wrapped in Angels is not a religious or even a spiritual process, but it can be for some. It can be whatever the person making their blanket wants it to be, because it is a process of healing which harnesses the individual creativity of the maker.
Each Angel Blanket is as different as the life of the person sewing it and is therefore unique to them. No sewing skills are required to be involved.
The program is free, and the blanket is the participant’s to keep, to become Wrapped in Angels!
